IBM Takes Lead in Deliverying SNMPv2 Standards...
and SNMPv2 Security

ComNet '96, Washington, D.C., January 30, 1996... Taking a leadership position in advancing open standards, IBM is demonstrating at ComNet '96 the first implementation of the Simple Network Management Protocol version 2 (SNMPv2) in a major network management platform.

IBM's SNMPv2 implementation arrives within a month of new standards being finalized by the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG). This leading-edge technology embraces newly standardized functions for solving two major problems, identified by customers and industry experts, in SNMP version 1: reliable communication between mid-level managers and the central manager, and performance during bulk retrieval of management information (MIB) table data.

Significantly, IBM's implementation also addresses a third issue with SNMP version 1 identified by customers and industry experts -- security. Now customers can feel confident that their SNMP messages on the wire can be protected from modification or disruption.

IBM's Simple, Robust Solution to SNMP Security

IBM's ComNet demonstration will show System View for AIX interoperating with other SNMPv1- and SNMPv2-compliant implementations, including Epilogue Technology Corp.'s SNMP agent and beta versions of IBM's SystemView Agent for OS/2 and SystemView Agent for AIX. Benefits of IBM's solution for SNMP security include:

Availability

IBM SystemView for AIX will ship in 1Q96 with SNMPv2 support, including:
